AUGUST IS ALL OVER FOR POOLS

While there are no federal holidays in it, August is an interesting month. Did you know in today’s calendar, August is the 8th month of the year, but back in Roman times, it was the 6th? Did you know that the Dog Days of Summer (a period of very hot and humid weather) ends on August 11th? August also boasts National Watermelon Day on the 3rd, National Smores Day on the 10th, and World Honeybee Day on the 20th. With so many reasons to celebrate, August is a wonderful time to use your pool!

FEELING HOT, HOT, HOT

August is the hottest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This means your pool water temperature will naturally increase with warm temperatures, so if you have a heater then you can use it less and save money. Your pool also presents the opportunity for you to seek relief from the hot temperatures and heat index to cool off. Did you know that heat is the #1 weather-related killer in the United States? In order to understand how heat will affect you, you need to understand the heat index which is a measure of temperature plus humidity. The heat index is closer to how it really feels outside. And here in New Jersey, we get some HUMID weather! So, your pool is a great escape from all the heat!

NIGHT WATCH

August also brings a full month of astronomical delights! August’s full moon, the 1st Supermoon of the year, reaches its full peak for viewing on August 19th. A supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at or near its closest point to Earth in its orbit. This alignment of the sun, Earth, and moon can make the moon appear up to 30% brighter and 14% larger than normal! For optimal viewing, on the 19th look toward the southeast after sunset to catch a glimpse. August is also the month of the Perseid meteor shower which reaches its peak between August 11th and 13th but lasts through the 22nd. A great place to watch all the astronomical events is in and around your pool. Do remember if you plan to night swim, you should have enough light to light the deepest part of your pool and the surrounding deck area.

CLOSING TIME

While not commonplace here in the Northeast, August can also be the start of the school year for many students, especially those in the southeastern region. So, you may want to start cramming in as much pool time as you can before you have to head back to school or wrap up your “summer Fridays”. If you don’t plan to use your pool in September, you may want to get a jump on closing and schedule your pool closing for late August when we aren’t as busy as we typically are during the regular closing season.

ALL HAIL AUGUST

So, with all these reasons to celebrate, why not do so from your pool? Enjoy all what’s left of the long lazy summer days from your pool. With all the extra usage, be aware that will increase your chemical consumption so you may want to reach out for an extra chem check visit and/or tips on how to shock your pool.
