Motor May
What is a motor and what part does it do for your pool? The motor is defined as “giving, imparting, or producing motion or action.” Some people think the pump and motor are interchangeable but that is not true. The pump has a motor that is a device that produces the action. The pump is a mechanical device that uses suction or pressure to raise or move the water. The pump cannot work without the motor, so it is essential to understand its operation and care for it properly.
GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING
Pump motors have various designs and sizes. Smaller motors are often found on spas and used for some cleaners. Residential motors typically range in the 1-2 horsepower range. Commercial motors can range from 3-50 horsepower and possibly even larger. Horsepower is “a unit of measurement of power, or the rate at which work is done, usually in reference to the output of engines or motors.”
MOTOR RACING
In July 2021, a law went into effect for pool pumps that said self-priming pumps past a certain horsepower (1.0 HP) threshold – whether residential or commercial – must meet an established performance standard. This can be met with variable-speed or multi-speed pumps. A variable speed (VS) pump can be operated at varying speeds which can help save on energy consumption saving you money! You can run it 24/7 on a lower speed at night which will ensure contact water circulation for your pool which helps with maintaining water clarity and reducing algae. Variable speed pumps also run quieter which is music to your ears!
MOTOR-MOUTH
But what does it mean, when your motor is noisy? Motors will produce some noise. But when it starts to whine and clank, the end is near and replacement will be needed. If you do not have a variable speed pump, we can no longer just replace the actual motor unlessit meets DOE efficiency requirements for anything 1hp or higher to meet regulations. However, stock on individual motors is limited and pricey. So, if your motor is making some noise, you may want to start budgeting.
