Chemical Safety

Pool chemicals are a must for every pool. They are used to maintain healthy water for bathers. Knowing how to use, store, and dispose of your chemicals is a top priority. Even if you have a service that adds the chemicals for you, you want to be aware of all the safety procedures that pool chemicals require. You want to protect yourself and your bathers from preventable injuries. You should get trained in pool chemical safety, ask for help if you are not trained for specific task, and read the entire product label and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before using. Safety Data Sheets are available on our website at: https://pooloperationmanagement.com/resources/tools-and-standards/

Wear appropriate safety equipment (for example, safety goggles and gloves).

  • Read product label before each use.
  • Handle in a well-ventilated area.
  • Open one container at a time and close it before opening others.
  • Minimize dust, fumes, and splashes.
  • Measure carefully before opening another.
  • Never mix: Chlorine products with acid; this could create toxic gases.
  • Never mix: Different pool chemicals (I.e., different types of chlorine products) with each other or with any other substance.
  • Only pre-dissolve pool chemicals when directed by product label
  • If label directs pre-dissolving, add the pool chemical to water. NEVER add water to the pool chemical because a violent reaction can occur.

Follow product label directions for chemical storage:

  • Wear appropriate safety equipment (I.e., safety goggles and gloves).
  • Separate incompatible chemicals (I.e., acid and chlorine).
  • Lock chemicals up to protect people and animals.
  • Keep chemicals dry and do not mix different chemicals.
  • Keep chemicals cool in a well-ventilated area that is away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep chemicals closed in original, labeled container.

Disposal of Pool Chemical Containers:

  • Follow product label directions for safe disposal; never reuse containers.
  • Contact your local or state hazardous materials agency for proper disposal procedures for pool chemicals in unlabeled containers.
  • Always respond to pool chemical spills immediately.
