MARCH IS TUMULTUOUS FOR POOLS

We have all heard the old adage March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb. This stems from the Farmer’s Almanac folklore that if at the start of the month the weather is bad, the end of the month the weather should be good based on ancestral beliefs in balance. Here in the Northeast, March weather can be a bit unpredictable. While spring officially starts on March 19, 2024, weather can still resemble the winter season. So, what is a pool owner to do with the conflict on the calendar?

Tumultuous is Disorderly

According to the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, we should expect an early spring. The Farmer’s Almanac also agrees with this prediction stating that the East coast (aside from Florida) should see higher than average temperatures and many dry days. This does not guarantee a random snow storm and the typical Nor’easter won’t grace us. So, we need to continue our backyard care for our pool during this time. This includes removing debris and water from our pool covers, ensuring the straps and springs are in place, and maintaining proper water levels.

Tumultuous is Confused

To open or not to open, that is the question. With all these predications of an early spring and nice weather, you may want to open your pool earlier than you typically do. It is important to remember that we do not want to open pools too early for several reasons.  The first thing to consider are the temperatures. If there are still freezing temperatures in the forecast, we do not want to open pools. This can cause water in the pool equipment, lines, and pool to freeze which can cause damage. Another thing to consider is are you really going to swim in March? If you don’t have a heater, the answer is a resounding no. If you do have a heater, the amount of energy to heat the water to maintain a comfortable temperature for swimming is a lot. And with the heater running way more often than during the summer time, that will cost a lot.

Tumultuous is Excited

So as spring starts to “sprung”, we naturally get excited for warmer weather and summer fun ahead. We want our pools open! March is the time to prepare for your pool opening. Firstly, be on the look-out for your seasonal agreement coming soon! In order to get on the schedule, you need to send back your service agreement with your anticipated swim date selected. The sooner you send it back, the better chance you get your date. Next, take inventory of what you currently have and what you will need for your pool opening. Did you need to order some need pool equipment or accessories and have been putting it off? Don’t wait any longer and get your order in now so we have the chance to order those items for you so when your opening dates comes around, you have everything you need for a successful swim season.
