Winter is a great time to take a dip…..into reading!

Ok, so your pool is closed and the cold weather is starting to hit us hard. We all tend to hibernate more in the winter which makes it a great time to do some reading. If you are looking for some good reads, why don’t you read up on pool care and safety?

Better Safe than Sorry

The Pool and Hot Tub Alliance has published The Sensible Way to Enjoy Your Inground Swimming Pool.  This is touted as an essential safety guide for inground pool owners. It covers many topics including understanding potential risks at your pool, drowning prevention tips, CPR and first aid, swimming skills,  developing pool rules, diving rules, and pool entry rules. It also does cover chemical usage and basic maintenance tips. It can be accessed here: https://www.phta.org/pub/?id=7592A1CE-1866-DAAC-99FB-8B7C7B4850A0

We’ve Got Real Chemistry

Pools use a variety of chemicals to maintain their cleanliness and clarity. Chemicals can be dangerous when used and stored haphazardly and improperly. Every chemical has its own Safety Data Sheet (SDS). This sheet outlines the ins and outs of the chemical including identifying the chemical and its hazards, first aid measures, fire fighting measures, accidental release measures, handling and storage protocol, exposure controls, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, and more.

You can access your Safety Data Sheets here: https://pooloperationmanagement.com/resources/tools-and-standards/

You can access and order pool chemical posters here: https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/swimming/safe-swimming-week/feature.html

I Don’t Test Well

Pool water testing is key to maintaining a clean, healthy pool. For bather health and comfort, disinfection and pH levels need to be properly maintained. While it is likely that your pool service company performs this for you, understanding how the disinfection process works makes you a better pool owner!

You can access disinfection and testing information here: https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/swimming/residential/disinfection-testing.html
